Los Angeles - United States Catholic Association, Catholics United, launched a petition to ban a retired Los Angeles Cardinal participated in a closed meeting to choose a successor to Pope Benedict XVI. The reason, the cardinal was never caught pedophilia scandal.
Target petition is Cardinal Roger Mahony, who last month was released from all duties of the church and the public due to the error handling infringement claims against dozens of priests since the 1980s. Mentioned that Cardinal Mahony had discussed how to cover up allegations of sex crimes committed by priests.
"Implications of you in the church sex abuse scandal and because you have been banned from participating in public duties in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, should be an indication to you that you should not attend the upcoming papal court," the petition.
Cardinal Mahony dismissed from his duties by his successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez in 2011.
"If a cardinal removed from public duties in his diocese, why he was allowed to choose the next pope," Catholics United said in a statement as reported by AFP on Tuesday (19/02/2013).
"Cardinal Mahony will only aggravate the scandal and a shame for our Church if he attended the papal conclave," said the U.S. Catholic association.
Cardinal Mahony who is now 76 years old, participated in the papal election that chose Joseph Ratzinger as pope in 2005. Ratzinger then use the name of Pope Benedict XVI.
In theory, Cardinal Mahony is still a member of the secret papal consisting of 117 cardinals under 80 years old, who will meet behind closed doors in the Vatican to elect a new pope.
